As the population of Texas grows and becomes more culturally diverse, the demand for professional legal interpreters is also growing. The Legal Interpreter Certificate Program at UT Austin's Center for Professional Education (CPE) offers a comprehensive, language-neutral legal interpreter program which trains you not only for the certification exam but for the legal interpreter profession. With a 40-hour program that exceeds the Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC) minimum requirements, you are provided with high-quality and flexible instruction, networking opportunities and engaging experiences which prepare you to enter the legal-interpreting workforce.
All instructors are Master Licensed Court Interpreters, with vast knowledge and experience in court interpreting.
The minimum requirement for this program is a High School Diploma. A High School or GED diploma are acceptable proofs of general education.
Students must possess advance written and oral proficiency in English and another spoken language. To be eligible to participate, students wishing to enroll in the Legal Interpreter Certificate Program must provide documentation related to their English and non-English linguistic proficiency.
Students who do not fulfill the language proficiency requirement by the dates listed will be dropped from the course.
Students must also have good computer skills, as the course is offered online, and assignments will require knowledge of Word and Excel.
The course requires a computer with a broadband internet connection, a webcam, headphones, microphone, pen and paper.
This course has been approved by the Judiciary Branch Certification Commission (JBCC) as a Pre-License Orientation course. In order to obtain full credit and a certificate of accomplishment to be presented to the JBCC, students must complete all ten online modules and attend all ten classroom sessions.
